This statute is a monument to the Catherinettes - or French women in the 1930's who were 25 and still unmarried. In this statute they appear going to Sainth Catherine Ball every 25th of November, a special celebration for the hopeful end of their single status. Its more broadly a reference to Saint Catherine the Virgin Martyr who was tortured by Roman Emperor Maxentius for being Catholic and vowing her virginity to Jesus Christ, nd most importantly for rejecting his repeated proposals. For this reason she was beheaded and her legacy remained that of the birgin martyr. This became a cautionary tale for women who celebrated Saint Catherine's day by decorating her "coiffe" or headress in churches befre praying at the feet of their patron saint for their prince charming.
