Mother Armenia is a monumental statue overlooking Yerevan from Victory Park. The site originally held a statue of Joseph Stalin, which was unveiled in 1950 and removed in 1962 during the Soviet Union’s move away from Stalin’s legacy. Ara Harutyunyan’s Mother Armenia was installed on the same pedestal in 1967, transforming the site from a monument to Stalin into a female personification of Armenia. The 22-meter-tall copper figure stands above a basalt pedestal designed by Rafayel Israyelian and symbolizes peace through strength, appearing almost like a guardian over the city. The pedestal also contains a military museum, and the monument remains an important gathering place for commemorations of Armenians who died during World War II.
